For Ages 8 - 12 and 13 - 17 Years Old

We offer a unique indoor and outdoor learning experience, which is designed to suit your needs and interests. Whether you are a Junior (aged 8 to 12) or a Senior (aged 13 to 17), there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Community Engagement (Ages 8 - 12)
At Sedbergh, we value the importance of community engagement and as a junior you will have the opportunity to visit surrounding towns and villages to complete class projects. By speaking to the local British people, you will develop your spoken and written English.

Senior pupils (Ages 13 - 17)
Discover how our senior pupils will develop their English through independent and peer learning with guidance from native English teachers. Our programme provides 22 hours of English lessons each week, with lessons taught Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (Thursdays and Sundays are excursion days). English is taught through different weekly themes; this takes place both inside the classroom – through lessons and afternoon sessions such as Active Communication – and outside the classroom – through our excursions, activities and Leadership Activities.

As a Senior, you will develop your independent learning and research skills by completing individual and group projects with support and guidance from your teachers.

Leadership Activities
Two core values of a British boarding school are leadership and team work. Every week there is an afternoon dedicated to developing these skills and students participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, such as cookery, film making and drama. These are designed to develop and enhance skills in individuals and provide a further opportunity to make friends and improve English outside the classroom.

Accommodation

Sedbergh International Summer School is well regarded for its superior level of pastoral care. Students live together in comfortable boarding houses; boys and girls in separate houses. Each House is looked after by an experienced Houseparent and Matron, which creates a happy and supportive “family style” environment. At Sedbergh, we recognise the achievements of all our students, so each week is celebrated with an Awards Ceremony which congratulates their academic and house contributions. If students have worked hard, put in effort and shown a desire to help others, they may be selected for the Student of the Week certificate. Students will continue the celebration with the weekly disco, where they can dance the night away with their friends.

Students live in mixed nationality rooms, normally of 2-4 beds. Houses are well-equipped with social areas providing games room, wifi and Sky TV. Students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their families at home. During the course, students will be able to send their clothes to the laundry. Clothes are collected from the boarding houses on Tuesday and Friday mornings and returned clean the same day, usually in the evening.

Laundry
Students’ clothes are given to the laundry together, so it is useful for the clothes to be named so that they are not lost or taken accidentally by another child. Beds and towels are changed on Saturdays – we ask that students remove their bedding on Saturday mornings before breakfast, and these are then changed for clean sheets. Bath towels are provided, and we recommend children bring their own towel for swimming. If your child is attending week one, we recommend they bring bath and swimming towels.  In week one, laundry will be collected on Wednesday and Friday.

Food
The School is proud of its excellent catering staff and dining facilities and a full and varied menu of ‘international style’ food is provided. For lunch and dinner, there is a choice of hot dishes and a vegetarian option and a salad bar are always provided. Fresh fruit is offered at every meal.

Boys and girls attend meals together. Lunches are formal and each week students are allocated to a table where they sit with a staff member. This helps all students, regardless of age and nationality, to make friends and to speak in English.
