Historically, Malmesbury was a centre for learning focused on and around Malmesbury Abbey, which was founded as a Benedictine monastery in the 7th century and rebuilt in its present form in 1180. Containing the tomb of England’s first King and boasting a stunning Norman entrance porch and scenic ruins, the Abbey is one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions.
