Stem Experience: English Language and Speciality Summer Camp for 10-13 Year-Olds

STEM is the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

New for 2018, STEM Experience immerses students in the English language combined with a variety of fun, educational and practical workshops, introducing the possibility of ‘Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths’ as future options for students.

With 15 hours of English language tuition each week and a maximum class size of 11 students, plus 7.5 hours of STEM classes per week, STEM Experience offers the opportunity for students to improve their English both in the classroom and also with a truly international community during the afternoon workshops.

Included in Bucksmore Stem Experience:

Course Requirements

  • Bucksmore STEM Experience can cater for all levels of English, from total beginner upwards.
  • The age range for students at Bucksmore STEM Experience is 10-13.

Course Content

The syllabus incorporates language study, language for life, excursion link lessons and academic skills sessions. The language study lessons focus on the communicative style of language learning and provide grammar and vocabulary tailored to a student’s ability. Whereas language for life lessons integrate a wider range of topics including learner training, literacy, culture and life skills.

Academic Skills Sessions

The academic skills sessions give students an introduction to exam techniques and are intended to help students improve the skills of academic reading, writing, listening and speaking. These sessions take place over two hours each week and culminate with students taking the Bucksmore Assessment. The variety of lessons and teaching material provide students with a stimulating and comprehensive learning experience throughout their stay with Bucksmore.

Bucksmore Coding: a
Computer Programming
Course for Students
Aged 13-16

Bucksmore Coding provides students of all language abilities with the opportunity to combine English language tuition with learning the fundamental elements of software design. This is a unique opportunity for students to bring together two key languages for the future: English and programming. The course runs as part of the larger Bucksmore Summer programme, with the addition of 7.5 hours of coding classes in a modern computer laboratory in place of English lessons.

As an introduction to computer programming, the course uses the innovative Raspberry Pi as a learning tool. The Raspberry Pi is miniaturised computer that allows anyone to explore the essentials of computing. At the end of the course, all students are given their own Raspberry Pi to take home in order to continue their learning. Students will also have an understanding of the software and hardware components that form the structure of computer systems, and how they communicate with one another as well as other systems. This will help students identify and comprehend the function of the main internal parts of basic computing structures.

Included With Bucksmore Coding:

  • 15 hours of English tuition per week + 7.5 hours of coding classes each week
  • 2 full-day excursions and 1 half-day trip per week
  • Bucksmore Assessment, report card & certificate
  • Full afternoon and evening activity programme on non-excursion days combined with students on Bucksmore Summer and Bucky Adventure programmes

Coding classes provide students of all language abilities with the opportunity to combine English language tuition with learning the fundamental elements of software design. This is a unique opportunity for students to bring together two key languages for the future: English and programming. The course runs as part of the larger Bucksmore Summer programme, with the addition of 7.5 hours of coding classes in a modern computer laboratory in place of English lessons.

The course aims to build language skills and confidence gradually through our multi-level syllabus, help students achieve their individual goals in language learning and gain a better understanding of English books, films, songs, the internet and other media.
