King’s Ely Summer School, Ely, Cambridgeshire

Locations

Our Summer School offers overseas boys and girls aged 13–16 an ideal opportunity to experience life in a UK Boarding School.

The course is designed to be both educational and fun. It is a time when students can learn a great deal about British life and culture and improve their academic skills, as well as relax and socialise in a safe and secure environment, with pleasant surroundings and in the company of students from all over the world. King’s Ely brings a thousand years of tradition and achievement to its pupils.

The King’s Ely Summer School is the bridge that enables children from non-English speaking cultures to access the very best of independent British education. Years of experience have enabled us to perfect an approach which instills confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of security in our students. Students are actively encouraged to continue with studies at King’s Ely International, and others successfully make the transition to other UK independent schools.

At King’s Ely Summer School, we believe the Activities, Sports and Excursions are very important because students are able to practise their English and apply what they have learnt in lessons in a fun environment, whilst relaxing with their new friends.

Excursions include:

  • British Seaside Trip
  • Cambridge Punting
  • London Sight Seeing
  • Outdoor Activity Centre
  • Stratford-upon-Avon
  • Woburn Safari Park

Lessons at King’s Ely Summer School are stimulating and varied provided by our qualified and imaginative teachers. Our students are tested on arrival and placed in multi-national classes based on ability. The maximum number of students in a class never exceeds 12.

The subjects covered are: English - Maths - Science - Humanities

Students’ progress is monitored closely during their stay and on departure all students receive a King’s Ely Summer School Certificate and a progress report.

Accommodation at King’s Ely Summer School

Students live in their own attractive buildings close to King’s Ely and close to the magnificent Cathedral in this small, quiet country town just north of Cambridge. Boys and girls live in separate boarding houses. Bedrooms may be single, double or multi-bedded and each student has his or her own workstation. Shared rooms are divided into students of similar ages and different nationalities, wherever possible. Bathrooms with showers and toilets are adjacent to the bedrooms.

Both boarding houses have comfortable common rooms where students can relax out of working hours and meet up with friends. Students may wish to make use of the kitchen facilities although, naturally, students are provided with three meals a day in the impressive Monastic Barn.

Dining at King’s Ely Summer School

The Monastic Barn is the unique and beautiful setting for meals at King’s Ely. King’s Ely is conscious of the effects of diet on a healthy lifestyle. Menus are planned centrally to provide good balance and choice. Local produce is used wherever possible. All food is presented in an appetising way to encourage healthy eating and fresh fruit is available in abundance.

Children are subtly monitored to ensure that they are eating sensibly. In the case of those with food allergies or special dietary requirements, the catering department liaises with the Medical Centre to develop an appropriate diet. These children are also allocated mentors who, working discreetly, ensure that special needs are met without fuss. The meals served during the Summer School are designed to appeal to all cultures.
